Had the same issue, fixed the same way. Strange enough, the problem appeared only on one of two computers being upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 (I have not got enough motivation to investigate this further). Users attempting to upgrade to 8.10 be warned: it's worth a try, but you may end up having to do a clean install anyway. I recommend having a separate /home partition.
